3.6 Clip Unit according to other Unit

Level of expertise required for this Chapter: Advanced; general Map Maker training

Very often, there is the need to cut a unit (polygon or line) according to another polygon unit. For example, if you have the altitude (or hydrology) map of a large area, but want to have only that part, which falls within your planning area, you want to cut it.

Main menu > Edit > Show Selection Manager > Select-tool (at toolbar left) > Select unit(s) to be cut > Selection Manager window: Actions > Extent > Trim vectors to polygons > Trim vectors to polygons window: Polygon file > Select folder and file, which ‘cuts’ > Open > OK

You can also cut the entire live layer:
In live layer mode: Right-mouse > Live layer actions > Live layer actions window: Extent > Trim vectors to polygon > OK > > Trim vectors to polygons window: Polygon file > Select folder and file, which ‘cuts’ > Open > OK

Remember, there is also the Cutter-tool from the toolbar left. See  Chapter 2.8 for the procedure to ‘split’ a polygon.

Alternatively, when digitizing and you want to use a new polygon to be ‘cut’ with another polygon also in the live layer, you can do that right after digitizing.

After closing the polygon with right-mouse > Polygon window > Actions > Trim live layer to polygon > OK

As another alternative you can use the Intersect option to clip a layer according to another layer:
Main menu > Utilities > Vector utilities > Intersect / Unite files > Intersect lines and polygons window: Add file > Select folder and file to be ‘cut’ > Open > Again: Add file > Select folder and file to cut > Open > Tick ‘Find intersections’ > Tick ‘Tidy boundaries’ > Execute > Save result as > Select folder > Give new temporary filename > Save > Quit
