A 1.4.2 Plotter installation

These instructions for the setup of the plotter are for the HP Designjet T610 of the Project. In future, if other plotters are to be installed, procedure will be similar.

1. Assemble the plotter, as instructed on the detailed instructions, which came with the plotter (first the stand, then mount the plotter).
2. Remove all the transport fixes (stopper, tapes).
3. Have the UPS (battery) ready. You can connect the plotter together with one computer plus screen to one standard UPS (800-1000 VA). In Ghana, never attempt to operate a plotter on the mains.
4. Follow the instructions: Connect to a (master) computer with a USB cable.
5. Follow the instructions: Connecting to power through a UPS.
6. Follow the instructions: Switch on and let the plotter initialize.
7. Follow the instructions: Install the 6 ink cartridges, on the left front.
8. Follow the instructions: Install the 3 printheads, after opening the main cover.
9. Follow the instructions: Install the printer driver, with the CD, which came with the plotter, on one master computer (or server) (see also Note 4 below).
10. Follow the instructions: Load paper, from the back.
11. On the master computer (or server), share the printer with other authorized users of the network.
12. Add the plotter to your list of printer, if it doesn’t already appear there.

After you finished plotting, you better disconnect the plotter both from the computer (data cable) and from the UPS (power cable).

Note 1: If the print on the plotter appears different than on a printer (for example, a Word document as an inserted map furniture), look for an alternative printer driver or protocol, or contact TCPD-HQ / LUPMIS.

Note 2: For printing large size on plotter, see special considerations for font and 'map furniture' in  Chapter 6.6.5.

Note 3: If there are any problems with the plotter when printing large size / oversize, check with
Main menu > File > System set up > Printing > Printer set up > Set up window: Composition printer driver: Recommended is the plotter driver (e.g. HP Designjet ...). Alternatively, test the MM composition driver.

Note 4: Some sources mention, that the HP printer driver for the DesignJet 500 is better than the one for the T610. If you have problems, test it.

A 1.4.3 Scanner installation

Scanner of choice at TCPD-HQ / LUPMIS is the Contex Hawk Eye G36 36” scanner (24 bit color, 200 dpi, 0.1% accuracy).

To install the scanner, follow the instructions, which came with the scanner:

1. Unpack and mount scanner and stand.
2. Take CD with WIDEsystem Tools: Install WIDEsystem and scanner maintenance
3. Turn PC off
4. Clean scan area of scanner
5. Connect scanner with PC through USB cable
6. Plug scanner to UPS (1000 VA UPS can feed one PC plus screen plus scanner, but not more)
7. Turn scanner on and wait one hour to warm up
8. Start scanner maintenance from button at bottom right of desktop

A 1.4.4 Scanning

1. Turn the scanner on and wait till it has warmed up (can easily take some 10-20 minutes)
2. Load Paint Shop Pro
3. Check that scanner is recognized by Paint Shop Pro (
Main menu > File > Import > TWAIN Source)
4. Scan (
Main menu > File > Import > TWAIN Acquire)
5. When menu asks for colour vs black/white: Select ‘grey document’
6. When fully displayed in Paint Shop Pro, save as JPG file (
Main menu > File > Save as > Save as window: Save as type: Select JPG >>>)
7. Decrease colour depth to 16 (
Main menu > Image > Decrease color depth > 16 Color palette >>>)
8. Enhance contrast and brightness (
Main menu > Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast > Set brightness to 10-60, Contrast to 20-60: > You have to find the best values > OK)
9. If there are still grey patches on the map, you can ‘replace’ them with white colour with the ‘Colour replacer’ (
Dropper tool > right-click to define the ‘from-colour’ > left-click to define the ‘to-colour’ for the colour replacement > Color replace (at toolbar left) > Tolerance (at top bar) very small > Move with the cursor over the patches)
