8.2.2a UPN: Concept

Level of expertise required for this Chapter: Expert

UPN (Unique Parcel Numbers) are based on cartographic concepts, not political, administrative, social etc- The system is therefore permanent and works nationwide in Ghana, easy to identify the location.

The code consists of 3 segments:

The chart below shows some samples; for example a high y value indicates a location up in the North of Ghana.

It is based on a 1 km grid of UTM (zone 30) for entire Ghana. Example below shows the 1 km grid for the city of Sekondi-Takoradi:

Reference point for each grid is the bottom left corner (South-West corner, in standard UTM km):

Inside each grid, parcels are numbered sequentially: 0001, 0002, 0003 etc. This can easiest be carried out by LUPMIS Drawing Tool software (see Chapter 8.2.2).

Parallel to this system coding, there exist 'addresses' of street name and property number for public orientation (with less rigid set-up). This doesn't replace or contradict the UPN system, but serves rather as a complement. Its coexistence can be compared with people's names and passport numbers. The Address Directory of LUPMIS gives immediate reference from one system to the other. Also, maps of LUPMIS will display both features, see example below from LUPMIS on OpenStreetMap:
